Criola is a non governmental organization, founded on September 2nd, 1992. It is conducted by black women from different backgrounds. Our work is directed to black women, teenagers and girls in Rio de Janeiro.

Through the years that we have been in service, we have reached over five thousand women with our activities. Our mission is to train and prepare these women to face racism, sexism and homophobia that is current in the Brazilian society.

Criola has received financial and political support from different groups and institutions, along these years. Some examples are, MUIMBRAS, The Heinrich Boll Foundation, Public Welfare Foundation, Global Fund for women, AJWS, ICCO, Ministério da Saúde/CN-DST/AIDS (Health ministry), Ashoka – Social Enterprises, SKN, Frauen Anstifitung, Global Exchange, FASE/ SAAP, McKinsey & Co. and also a significant part of the black community has helped in the making of our projects. These are directed by our founding associates with the help of collaborators and volunteers.
